Hussain and the Power of Practice
Nine-year-old Hussain had endless energy and a heart full of curiosity, but his absolute favorite thing in the world was playing football on his island's dusty community pitch. There was only one problem: whenever Hussain kicked the ball toward the net, it soared high into the palm trees or skittered far off to the side. He couldn't score a single goal.
One breezy afternoon, after missing yet another open shot, Hussain sat on the sidelines with his head in his hands, ready to quit. His grandfather noticed, walked over, and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Grandpa, I'm just no good at this," Hussain mumbled. "The other boys make it look effortless."
His grandfather smiled warmly. "No one is born a champion, Hussain. The secret isn't magic or luck—it is practice. If you walk away today, nothing changes tomorrow. But if you show up every day, you unlock a power that nobody can take from you."
Those words lit a spark inside Hussain. The very next day, right after afternoon prayers, he carried his scuffed football back to the empty pitch.
At first, it was frustrating. Out of ten kicks, barely one scraped the inside post. But instead of hanging his head, Hussain paid attention. He adjusted his stance. He changed where his foot struck the leather. Sun or light drizzle, he was there every single evening, taking shot after shot until his shins were caked in sand. Within a few weeks, three out of ten found the net. By the end of the month, seven out of ten flew straight past the painted goalposts.
The real test arrived with the school inter-house tournament final. With only seconds left on the clock and the scores deadlocked, Hussain’s team won a penalty kick.
The entire crowd fell silent. Every eye was locked on Hussain as he placed the ball on the penalty spot. His heart hammered in his chest, but he took a deep, steadying breath. He didn't think about the crowd or the pressure; he simply pictured the hundreds of quiet afternoons he had spent practicing alone on that very sand.
Hussain stepped back, accelerated forward, and struck the ball with clean, confident precision. It curved sharply through the air and tucked cleanly into the top corner of the net, leaving the goalkeeper frozen in place.
As his teammates rushed in to celebrate their victory, Hussain looked over to see his grandfather beaming with pride. In that moment, Hussain knew that true skill isn't something you are simply handed—it is built, kick by kick, through the unstoppable power of practice.
