The Pencil That Never Quit
Deep inside a bright blue pencil case, a brand-new yellow pencil named Percy waited eagerly for his first big adventure. Percy had a gleaming coat of paint, a tidy pink eraser, and a finely sharpened graphite tip. More than anything, he dreamed of helping a child draw wonderful pictures and write magical stories.
One afternoon, a little boy named Zayan unzipped the case and picked Percy up. Zayan had a blank sheet of paper and a school art competition to win. He wanted to draw a soaring eagle flying high above mountain peaks.
Excited and focused, Zayan pressed down onto the paper. But in his rush, he pushed far too hard.
Snap!
Percy’s sharp tip broke into tiny pieces, leaving a blunt, jagged mark on the page.
"Ouch!" Percy gasped inwardly. From the corner of the pencil case, the slick ballpoint pens whispered, "Well, look at that. He's broken. He's totally useless now."
Percy felt a wave of sadness, but he made a quiet promise to himself: he was not going to quit.
Zayan reached for a small silver sharpener. As Percy slipped inside, the blades shaved away his smooth yellow coat. It was dizzying, tight, and uncomfortable. Yet Percy held on with all his might. He knew that to be useful again, he had to endure the sharpening. Growth often feels uncomfortable, but it prepares you for something greater.
When Zayan pulled him out, Percy was a little shorter than before, but his tip was sharper, stronger, and more precise than ever.
Zayan smiled, turned to the paper, and began sketching again. Gliding across the page with steady confidence, Percy outlined the eagle’s sweeping wings, textured feathers, and distant snowy ridges. Together, they didn't stop until the entire scene came alive.
The next day, Zayan’s drawing won first place in the art contest, pinned proudly at the center of the school hall.
Over time, Percy grew shorter with every challenge and every trip to the sharpener, but he never lost his spirit. He had learned the secret to doing great things: setbacks might wear you down, but each trial is just a sharpening that prepares you to leave your best mark on the world.
